Sour Patch Kids are fruit-flavored jellies shaped like children and covered in citric and tartaric acid for their signature sour and sweet flavor. 

Frank Gallatoli, a confectioner at Jarrett International in Ontario, Canada, invented Sour Patch Kids in the 1970s. Originally called Mars Men and shaped like martians, the candies were rebranded as Sour Patch Kids in 1985 to capitalize on the popularity of Cabbage Patch Kids.
