The Harmsens started their business in 1949 with an ice cream shop called the Jolly Rancher, named after their favorite Minneapolis hotel. However, the business struggled because people in Colorado didn't want to buy ice cream in the winter. The Harmsens then began selling cinnamon-flavored hard candy sticks called Fire Sticks, which eventually became the oblong-shaped Jolly Ranchers we know today.
